what no one seems to have picked up on is that iplayer (and it’s successor technologies) provide an enormous opportunity to REDUCE the licence fee and simultaneously amplify UK “soft power”. How so? Simply make 2 changes to the rules.
1) require a TV Licence ID to login to iplayer (no extra charges, just login with the TV Licence Number)
2) allow ANYONE to buy a TV Licence – including those millions of discerning potential viewers and listeners from around the world who would love to have access the Beeb and would gladly pay to get it.
The result would certainly feed additional millions into the BBC coffers, possibly enough to allow an overall reduction to the licence fee for everyone paying it.
Will it happen? Not a chance. Far too intelligent a response for the politicians and media to contemplate…
