These bills, and the enforcement philosophy that underlies them, represent a dramatic retreat from this country’s tradition of leadership in supporting the free exchange of information and ideas on the internet

not to mention:

“News of the proposed changes has even reached China, where it is inspiring some bloggers to take the piss out of America for copying the Great Firewall of China.”

Issues like this should matter to legislators and citizen alike.

I have been predicting, for several years now, that the authoritianism and permitted levels of liberty in both China and the USA are likely to converge. Legislation like this only confirms my worst fears…
