The Army’s Bold Plan to Turn Soldiers Into Telepaths | Machine-Brain Connections | DISCOVER Magazine.

This is a major thread of the technology which will lead to the implants which will replace your phone/computer interface/watch/wallet etc.

Every thing you need to do which requires accessing or creating information will be possible just by thinking it. You will no longer have to watch TV, computer monitors or phone screens. What you need to see will appear wherever you want it in your field of vision, at whatever resolution and size makes sense at the time. That’ll range from audible alarms with subtitles reminding you what it is you’re not supposed to forget, through direct person to person “phone calls” (optionally) without involving the vocal cords (although that might be difficult to master for some) and on into full immersive VR where, if you let yourself, you’ll believe you’re on another planet.

As you might have guessed, I’m looking forward to it.

But I’m keenly aware that it comes with enormous risks unless by the time the technology arrives, we have somehow rid ourselves of authoritarian government. And that’s a bit unlikely in the next 20 years or so, which is all it’s going to take before the first mainstream commercial versions of this stuff hits the online shopping malls.

Think how – today – the authoritarians give themselves “legal” authority to search the entire contents of your laptop whenever it suits them. What is going to stop them – if and when it becomes technically possible – from giving themselves the means and “legal” authority to search the entire contents of your head whenever it suits them?

Whoa! It would be amazing if that kind of technology does come onto the market, although I’m not sure if we should be looking forward to that kind of power…

  2. The reason I spend so much time trying to deal with the human risks (i.e. our inability to create, agree or implement rational social decision making procedures and the consequent and consistent abuse of power by incompetent authoritarians) is because I desperately want to see the human species benefit from the technology we’re about to invent.

The benefits need to outweigh the risks and, unfortunately, at the moment, they don’t. In other words, were such technology around today, it would used to control us, not liberate us.

    We need to change that…
