is there any need for a government to spy on its citizens? Yes, damn right there is. Occasionally.

Is there any justification for allowing such surveillance without first ensuring a full audit trail of the entire surveillance decision and process so that the watchers are themselves watched? Absolutely NEVER. And any state where such surveillance is permitted without such controls (see my Trusted Surveillance proposals) is, by definition, a Police State.

And that means, as of now, most of us live in Police States…
