New definition of addiction | Heroin and Cornflakes

the danger here is that the authoritarians will see this as endorsement for their various illegitimate prohibition arguments. The policy is necessary – they will argue – to prevent self-harm. It’s a childish and naive argument, unfortunately well aimed at a childish and naive audience.

The only rational conclusion which follows from this research, should it be accepted, is that we should advise anyone whose brain is still developing (i.e. anyone under the age of 25) that they should moderate their indulgence in any potentially addictive behaviour if they don’t wish the rest of their lives to be controlled by the addiction. That applies as much to gambling and bunjee jumping as it does to alcohol, opiates, religion and orgies.
