classic “wilfull blindness” from a pope. He points out that the spate of recent disasters reminds us that mankind is not all powerful. It also reminds the religious believer, however, that god is either a sadistic bastard for making the disasters happen in the first place; or he’s indifferent to our fate, by virtue of choosing not to intervene; or he’s not as omnipotent as advertised – and can’t intervene. Any way you play it, natural disasters are much more of a challenge to religious beliefs than scientific ones…
