Asteroid as strong as 15 atomic bombs whizzes by earth | Mail Online

an asteroid “as strong as 15 atomic bombs” is about as stupid a phrase as I’ve ever read in a “newspaper”. Presumably what they’re trying to convey is something about the kinetic energy which would be released if a 50 metre chunk of rock hit the planet, together with some notion of the damage it might cause. Given that there’s not even a standard “atomic bomb” and that the range of viable nuclear explosions ranges from a few kilotons to tens of megatonnes (of dynamite) the article effectively tells us nothing other than the bleedin obvious. There would be a big bang and a lot of damage (if it hit somewhere near a population centre).
