Smartphones drive language learning innovation

http://www.physorg.com/news170216825.html

All well and good, but I don’t really want to learn languages (unless it’s just a matter of downloading a module). I want a babel fish. But we’re clearly getting closer to that as well by the month if not the minute…

Lumosity Games

well that pissed me off. I scored 2000 with a reaction time of 1071 ms and wanted to see how that compared (as advertised) to other gullible idiots like me, and it’s a bluff. Unless I missed a link somewhere (which has been known), you have to sign up to buy something if you want to see the comparison. Bollocks to that. So, if you try it, lemme know how you got on, and we’ll at least be able to do our own private comparisons. I’ll show you mine if you show me yours. Hmmm… I’ve already blown it haven’t I.

The L-Space Web: Death and What Comes Next

I do love DEATH (and his grand-daughter Susan). Always my favourite characters in the Discworld books…

I’m afraid I’m inclined to agree, though the grounds for my pessimism keep shifting. This time last year, I thought the biggest threat was the financial meltdown and the inevitable collapse of confidence in the Dollar. I turned out to be wrong about that because (as I later understood) the rest of the world has a vested interest in supporting the Dollar. China, for example, traditionally the last major communist enemy of Capitalist America, cannot afford to see the Dollar decline in value. Half it’s own accumulated profits would go down the plughole.

Today, it’s the rabid right wing reaction to Obama which surfaces in the Health Care debate, the “Birth Certificate” issue, the increasing hostility between Xtians and Atheists, the ludicrous over-reactions to things like same-sex marriages, the ongoing wars over abortion and drugs and so on.

The psychic fury on display speaks to me of a deeply divided and psychotic nation, which surely will not take too much of a spark to ignite widespread violence possibly even up to and including civil war. Let’s hope I’m wrong about that one too…

Piracy, Morals and The Need for Change | TorrentFreak

spot on. And we’re a good example of the one of the points he’s making. We love Weeds. We download every new episode as soon as it appears anywhere on the web. Here, for example, is Episode 10 of Series 5.

But we have also bought every boxed set of every series so far released. Why? Quality is part of the answer, the Downloads are not bad but not full broadcast quality. The DVDs are. But the real reason is that we actually want to support the writer (Jenji Kohan) and her efforts. The upkeep on her $1.5 million dollar mansion must require a fair number of DVD’s to finance it and she’s doing such a good job countering the War on Drugs propaganda that I’m more than happy to share in maintaining whatever lifestyle she can get out of it.

Similarly, I recorded the Elbow Concert when the Beeb broadcast it back in February. And I’ve bought the DVD/CD box set of that as well. And so on…

This is why I have no qualms about the music I upload to or download from the web. I am absolutely certain that I have increased the sales of various artists, even if only be a handful in most cases. I certainly don’t “owe” them a penny!
