Greta Christinas Blog: Atheists and Anger

http://gretachristina.typepad.com/greta_christinas_weblog/2007/10/atheists-and-an.html?cid=95399658

this is a ‘king brilliant rant and, in my view, there is absolutely no contradiction in my support for this right alongside my equally enthusiastic support for this

We certainly should be enraged at what religion is doing to our fellow humans. This is why I would love, without using an Authoritarian technique, to prevent Parents indoctrinating their kids with this shit. And the only technique we’ve got, frankly, is the interweb and sucking them into our message early enough to rescue them from a lifetime of psychosis. (as I was talking about here)

But their liberation ABSOLUTELY MUST be on the basis of their own free and informed consent, like this happy example. Any HINT of coercion, and I’m on their side…

Genetically modified Marijuana food contest could end prohibition

http://www.nolanchart.com/article4747.html

er… so what would stop the prohibitionists merely extending the insanity to any products that contained thc? It’ll take ’em a lot less time to change the law to accomodate the new sources than it will to get those sources to market…

If they wanna start messing with the genes, why not go the whole hog and develop multiple forms of cannabis that looks like innocent food crops from above, so that they can be grown out in the fields, in and amongst those crops, without detection. now there’s a plan…

Norm Stamper: Ending the “War on Drugs”: The Fierce Urgency of…When?

I agree with metal that its a good tight summary of the case. It’s not, of course, a remotely new message but always welcome nevertheless. Unfortunately, like most of us when we spell out the case against prohibition, he’s preaching to the choir…

my kind of atheist activist.

We can’t bully the opposition into giving up religion and any attacks on them which feel like attacks only provoke defensive postures and counterattacks. Gentle subversion is the key. I don’t claim this as an insight, more an accidental discovery, through the effect this story had on wavering worshippers.

The effect (to help them steer clear of religious belief at a critical point in their development) was entirely unplanned and unintended, but I don’t mind putting it on record that if I achieve nothing else of note in this life, I’m happy I achieved that effect for (at least) several hundred newly “immunized” atheists…

Hubble Heritage Astronomical Image of Hoags Object: Big JPG

http://heritage.stsci.edu/2002/21/big.html

Hoags object is really really weird.

It’s an object 600 million light years away. It’s slightly bigger than our own Galaxy and, as you can see, half of it is completely empty (or filled with stuff too faint even for the Hubble Telescope to see). That kind of “damage” to a galaxy is caused (usually) by a collision with another galaxy but, as you can also see, there IS no other (close) galaxy which could have been responsible.

In addition, the result of such collisions is hardly ever so perfectly symmetrical; all of which makes it a very very rare beast indeed. But, as if that’s not enough, take a close look at the 1 oclock position and what do you see? That’s right, another one just like it but about 3 billion light years further back – and WE just happen to be in the very very small segment of the universe where the one unexplained symmetrical ring galaxy is visible through the other…

Why is the United States backing Mexican drug gangs? | The Argument

http://experts.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2009/01/12/why_is_the_united_states_backing_mexican_drug_gangs

yeah, it could enforce its own laws. But that would cost the big fish a vast amount of money, so that aint gonna happen.

Alternatively, it could grow up and abandon those laws, legalise, regulate and tax the recreational drug trade, putting about $15 Billion plus into the legal economy, including at least $5 billion in taxes and eliminating, in the process, half the prison population, half the violent crime and Mexico’s growing civil war all in one simple move.

But that too, will cost the big fish loadsamoney, so, again, that ain’t gonna happen either…
